What to expect this year...

Fourth grade is a really exciting year! We will be studying Utah History. We will study everything from our Native American roots to the present day 29 counties and the people that live there. In Science we will learn about weather, rocks, and the water cycle! In Reading we will be following the Reading Street program. As part of the Reading Street program we will read passages from some of my favorite books! In Math we will be following the Envision program. We will learn some exciting new concepts, such as long multiplication and fractions. Both our reading and math programs can be accessed on this website under the "Links" tab and then by clicking on the "Pearson Realize" icon.

Classroom Supplies...

I will provide all the needed supplies for your student. You do NOT need to purchase pencils, pencil boxes, folders, binders, etc. I will make sure that they have what they need to succeed! Supply donations are welcome, please see suggestions below.

Graded Assignments...

Each Monday I will also send home graded assignments from the previous week. If you have questions on any scores on the assignments please contact me ASAP.  Occasionally, if students have not completed an assignment to my satisfaction I will send it home with a “Please Redo” stamp. If you child redoes the assignment, they can return it back to me and I will give points back on their assignments.

Classroom Behavior...

I expect nothing but the best from my students! I try to use positive reinforcement for good behavior. Students may earn a variety of prizes and rewards for good behavior. I try very hard to reward individual students for good behavior. Individual rewards can include but are not limited to electronic time, sitting by a friend for a day, lunch in the classroom, sitting in the teacher’s chair for a day, something to celebrate tickets, etc. I try to switch up the individual rewards to keep students motivated. For students that show outstanding behavior or maturity in difficult situations they may earn Student of the Month awards in addition. As a class they may earn popcorn parties, root beer float parties, extra recess, electronic parties, and so on.
I strictly follow the school wide program of using Precision Commands.  For students who are not following directions I will ask them to “please…” and repeat the directions. If they continue to not follow directions I will say, “I need you to…” and again repeat the directions, they will also change colors on our behavior chart down to yellow.  If they still choose not to comply they will change their color to red and be sent to Think Time.  During Think Time the student is sent to another classroom and sits quietly by him or herself. They will fill out a form explaining their behavior and how they plan to change it. The teacher will spend a few minutes conferencing with the student and then they will be sent back to their class where they are welcome to participate in classroom activities again. If inappropriate behavior continues further I will then report it to the office.

Classroom Donations...

If you would like to donate to your child’s classroom this year, I would appreciate such items as whiteboard markers, Kleenex, disinfecting wipes, glue sticks, pencils, crayons, colored pencils, erasers, washable markers, Ziploc bags, brown paper bags, paper plates, paper bowls, napkins, hand sanitizer, books for our library, etc. Please do not feel obligated to donate. This is strictly voluntary.

Parent Volunteers...

In order to participate in the classroom as a parent volunteer or go on field trips you must sign up with Canyons School District. You must fill out a new application EACH school year! You can access this application by going to canyonsdistrict.org.  Click on the “Parents and Students” tab. Then click on the “Volunteers” link. There you should find an application to complete. Please complete this application ASAP, as it takes 48 hours to register your application.

I am ALWAYS in need of parent volunteers to help with reading groups, practicing math facts with children, help completing homework folders, or help with projects going on in the class. I also love parent volunteers to help with special holiday celebrations. If you are interested I will have a sign up at Back to School Night. Volunteering in the classroom is a great way to gain a better understanding of our daily routines in the classroom and connect with your child!

We also need parent volunteers when going on Field Trips! Make sure to watch for notes about Field Trips. On the Field Trip Permission Slip will be a spot for you to volunteer if you would like to attend with our class!
